Update.

I think I have found out what StorageWMI 4 means. Guess what, the command failed.

Unfortunately I am experiencing a similar issue with Storage Spaces. I have a 5 disk group with two disks that switched to "retired" status. However the data did not appear to spread across a new 6TB drive after insertion.

The array is "detached" and data is inaccessible. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Roger,

Yes I need further assistance. Maybe it wasn't obvious but the question is, how can I find out why it failed? To just say if failed is no help whatsoever.

If it helps, I am trying to repair the Storage Space that has reduced Resiliency shown below so that I can remove and fix the drive that is getting errors. As you can see, the repair fails but doesn't tell me why.

I would be grateful for advice on how I resolve this problem, and I only have room to add one drive, and that on the assumption I can then remove another afterwards. What I wish to do now is replace the two 3TB drives with two 6TB drives. I believe that it is one of the 3TB drives that is getting errors and created the problem.

I thought I would say how this worked out. The first surprise was that adding an extra disk instantly cleared the Reduced Resiliency condition. The disk I added was 6TB. I then removed the Vol4. I also did the same with the Vol3, added a 6TB disk an then removed Vol3. I have now replaced the two 3TB disks with 6TB disks.

This is an example of how I removed one drive.

Added the new disk through  the panels Add Drives

Using Windows Powershell ISE

Set-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName Vol4 -Usage Retired

  • Repair-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName 'VMs'
  • Wait to finishRepair-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName 'Home Server Pool B'
  • Wait to finish
  • Removed Vol4 through the panel.
  • Could instead have doneRemove-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName 'Vol4'
